Small
and attractive nut trees, filberts (hazelnuts) are ideal in yard
landscapes.Although a deciduous plant, it is in
some phase of growth virtually year round. Filbert trees feature
long and attractive, yellow male catkins that form in early fall, tiny,
bright red, female flowers that open in mid-winter, and delicious and
nutritious nuts that are ready to harvest in September.
Filberts tend to grow as a shrub and rarely exceed ten
to twelve feet in height.
Our oldest trees are beginning to die and
the nuts seem to be very susceptible to worms. We have younger trees
growing to replace the older ones.
Along with walnuts, filberts were a cash crop on
our farm for many decades.
